Overview on Engineering Branches

Engineering is the field dedicated to using scientific and mathematical knowledge to research and find answers to technical problems. Engineering means to find economical solution for technological problems. Engineer's work is the link between perceived social needs and commercial applications. Engineers design products, machinery to build those products, plants in which those products are made, and the systems that ensure the quality of the products and the efficiency of the workforce and manufacturing process. Engineers design, plan, and supervise the construction of buildings, highways, and transit systems. They develop and implement improved ways to extract, process, and use raw materials, such as petroleum and natural gas.

Engineering offers tremendous scope for employment depending upon the area of specialization. There are numerous opportunities for engineers in the private sector, public sector, Defense services, in Civil Aviation Industry, Merchant Navy and computer software industry, etc. Engineers with Post Graduate degree get senior position in private and government department or as a planner or advisor on basic infrastructure development of the industry. An engineer with entrepreneurship abilities can also set up his/her own enterprise. Professionals in this field are in great demand today and the demand keeps on burgeoning day by day.

Broad categories of Engineering

There are more than 25 major specialties in Engineering which are recognized and the major branches have numerous subdivisions. Engineers in each branch have a base of knowledge and training that can be applied in many fields. Electronics engineers, for example, work in the medical, computer, communications, and missile guidance fields. Because there are many separate problems to solve in a large engineering project, engineers in one field often work closely with specialists in other scientific, engineering, and business occupations.

On the broad the Engineering can be categorized as follows:
Mechanical Engineering : Mechanical Engineering major deals with the design, manufacturing and maintenance of mechanical systems. Few examples of mechanical systems are machines, automobile, aeroplane, elevators, earth movers and combustion engines.

Electrical & Electronics Engineering : Electrical and Electronics major deals with electronics and electrical equipments, such as GPS systems, robotic instruments and power generators.

Computers & Communications Engineering : Computers & Communications Engineering major deals with the computers & information systems. Hardware, Software and Communications are the major areas of study under this major. Example for the application of computer, is the use of computers in Banking system, use of websites to broadcast the information.

Civil Engineering : Civil Engineering Major focus on the construction and operation of building structures, roads, bridges, dams, etc. Study of Environment, behavior of earth materials, analysis and design of load bearing structures, use of satellites to gather information about the earth comes under this major.

Chemical Engineering : Chemical Engineering majors deals with the study of chemical process, and machineries that enable chemical reactions needed to make products or test theories. This major also involves the combined study of physics, chemistry, bio-chemistry and mathematics.

Bio-Technology : Bio-Technology major deals with the study of genetic systems, food processing, equipments used in the medicine field & manufacturing of the drugs as well. This majors deals with the study of any technological application that uses biological systems or living organisms to make or modify products or processes for specific use. The major application of biotechnology is in the field of agriculture, genetics, food production and medicine.
